The development of farce as a dramatic genre in the West has a long and storied history, having as much to do with food as entertainment; but it had its biggest rise in the Middle Ages when playwrights started inserting unscripted buffoonery into religious plays. Similarly, the ascent of Donald Trump to the global political stage has pulled the rug from under many geopolitical conventions, leaving friends and foes both dumbfounded and scurrying to adjust to this new act.
